Cultivating Empathy Through Storytelling: An Artist's Statement

At the heart of everything I do lies a profound belief in the power of storytelling. For the most part, my art medium of choice is theatre, specifically playwriting and directing.

When done right, theatre fosters empathy, ignites conversations, and challenges assumptions. This transformative potential fuels my passion for playwriting and my unwavering commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive theatrical landscape.

My journey began with a personal encounter. In 2016, I mentored a Black single mother who wanted to write a play about her life, but she lacked formal training. As a Black woman, I could fully empathize with her struggle and was inspired to cultivate opportunities for underrepresented voices.

Drawing on my experience, I guided her in crafting her play, which Brown Soul Productions, the organization I co-founded, helped workshop. Witnessing this woman blossom from a hesitant beginner into a confident playwright solidified my belief in the power of mentorship and representation and the tangible impact I could have on someone's creative journey.

My commitment to equity, fairness, and representation extends far beyond playwriting. I actively seek workshops and classes that broaden my understanding of race, gender, and ability. My ultimate goal is to enter any room and create a nurturing environment where artists, particularly women of color, feel empowered to explore their stories and contribute their unique perspectives.

Theatre, at its best, has the power to transform. It can spark conversations, challenge assumptions, and foster empathy. I believe in storytelling's transformative power, and I am committed to using my skills and experience to inspire and entertain audience members and support and uplift other artists to create a richer, more inclusive theatrical landscape.
